Plant Room & Boiler Room Gas Detection

Boiler houses combine large gas volumes, confined space and infrequent occupancy. Fixed detection with automatic isolation and monitored ventilation is the standard control.

  • Methane detection at high level, CO at breathing height
  • Slam-shut valve on the plant room gas main
  • Ventilation proven and monitored, with BMS alarm routing

Interlock Controller → Fan Sensors → Proving Panel → Solenoid Valve. Losing any proof of ventilation de-energises the valve and isolates the gas supply.

Typical plant room design

  • Detection panel at the entry door with repeat indication outside
  • Methane heads above each burner and at the meter/regulator
  • CO head at working height in the combustion area
  • Automatic shut-off valve upstream of the boiler manifold
  • Ventilation louvre or fan status monitored and interlocked
  • Do-not-enter beacon and sounder at all access points

Ventilation monitoring

Where mechanical ventilation serves a plant room, its failure must isolate gas or raise an alarm depending on the risk assessment. Louvre position switches and differential pressure sensing are both used; both are commissioned with recorded set points.

Maintenance regime

  • Annual gas-applied calibration of every head
  • Functional test of valve closure and sounders
  • Panel battery and fault-relay verification
  • Review of any recorded alarm events with the duty holder

Frequently asked questions

Does every boiler room need gas detection?

Not automatically, but IGEM/UP/19 design and a site risk assessment commonly require it where the plant room is confined, below ground or infrequently occupied.

Should detection close the gas valve automatically?

In most plant room designs yes, on high alarm, with a manual reset so an engineer must attend before gas is restored.
