Pillar guide

Gas Solenoid Valves for Commercial Premises

The gas solenoid valve is the final safety element of an interlock or proving system. It is normally closed and fail-safe: lose the signal or lose power and the valve shuts, isolating the catering or plant room gas supply.

  • Normally closed, fail-safe automatic shut-off valves
  • Manual reset and automatic reset variants for different duties
  • Sized on gas rate and pressure drop, not just pipe thread

Interlock Controller → Fan Sensors → Proving Panel → Solenoid Valve. Losing any proof of ventilation de-energises the valve and isolates the gas supply.

Types of automatic shut-off valve

  • Manual reset (latching): after any trip an operator must physically reset the valve — preferred for catering interlocks
  • Automatic reset: reopens when the control signal returns, used where re-energising is safe
  • Slam-shut / fast-acting: closes within one second for gas detection isolation
  • Proving-rated valves: paired upstream and downstream for pressure proving sequences

Sizing and specification

ConsiderationWhy it matters
Gas rate (m³/h) and inlet pressureDetermines DN size and acceptable pressure drop at full load
Coil voltage (230V AC / 24V DC)Must match the control panel output
Ambient temperature and IP ratingPlant rooms and canopy voids run hot and dusty
OrientationMost valves are coil-upright only; check the manufacturer data plate

Testing and certification

Every valve installation or replacement ends with a tightness test, a functional trip test from each sensing device and the emergency stop, and a recorded closure time. Keep the certificate with the kitchen's gas records.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a gas solenoid valve normally closed?

So that any loss of power or control signal results in gas isolation rather than an uncontrolled supply — the safe failure mode.

Can I reset a buzzing solenoid valve myself?

A buzzing coil indicates an electrical or mechanical fault. Isolate the gas at the emergency control and call a Gas Safe registered commercial engineer.

How long do gas solenoid valves last?

Typically 8–12 years in catering service, shorter in hot, greasy canopy voids. Coils usually fail before the valve body.
