Gas Solenoid Valve Installation

Solenoid valve installation is notifiable commercial gas work. Position, orientation and pressure drop matter as much as the electrical connection to the interlock panel.

  • Installed downstream of the emergency control valve, before appliance branches
  • Accessible for manual reset without entering the canopy void
  • Commissioned with tightness test and recorded trip times

Installation sequence

  • Survey gas rate, pressure and pipe route; confirm valve DN and coil voltage
  • Isolate and purge the section in line with IGEM procedures
  • Fit the valve with the flow arrow correct and coil upright, supported independently of the pipework
  • Run the coil cable in appropriate containment away from hot surfaces back to the control panel
  • Fit or verify emergency stop buttons on escape routes
  • Tightness test, purge and relight all appliances
  • Functional test every trip path and record closure times

Common installation defects

  • Valve installed against the flow arrow or with the coil horizontal
  • Undersized valve causing pressure drop and appliance under-firing
  • Valve buried above a canopy with no access for manual reset
  • Coil cable in unsuitable flex, chafing on ductwork
  • No tightness test record or commissioning certificate issued

Frequently asked questions

Where should the solenoid valve be fitted?

Downstream of the emergency control valve and upstream of appliance branch connections, in an accessible, ventilated position.

Does solenoid valve installation need certifying?

Yes — it is part of the gas safety system and must be commissioned, tested and recorded by a Gas Safe registered commercial engineer.
