Fault guide
Gas Solenoid Valve Fault: Valve Won't Open or Keeps Closing
A commercial kitchen gas solenoid valve is normally closed — it needs a healthy 230V (or 24V) signal from the interlock panel to open and stay open. When the valve will not open or keeps closing, the fault is either the electrical signal reaching it, the coil itself, or the valve body.
- Normally closed valves fail safe — no signal means no gas
- Replacement Banico and equivalent valves in stock, RP 3/4" to RP 2"
- Coil, signal and valve body tested properly rather than swapped on a guess
Valve won't open
| Cause | How it presents | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No signal from the panel | Panel shows a fault or no gas-on lamp | Diagnose the interlock input that is holding it closed |
| Open circuit coil | Panel healthy, no click, no gas, coil cold | Replace the coil or valve |
| Burnt-out coil | Coil discoloured, smell of hot varnish | Replace and check for continuous over-voltage or hot plant room |
| Valve stuck shut | Coil energised and warm, still no gas | Strip or replace the valve — usually debris or a seized armature |
| Manual valve closed downstream | Valve clicks open, appliances still dead | Open and label isolation valves |
| Valve fitted the wrong way round | Never worked since installation | Refit with the flow arrow correct and coil upright |
Valve keeps closing during service
- Ventilation proof dropping out — the panel de-energises the coil the instant airflow is lost
- Emergency stop circuit making and breaking on a loose or corroded terminal
- Coil overheating in an unventilated plant room and going high-resistance when hot
- Voltage dips when other kitchen plant starts, dropping the coil out
- Gas detection head in intermittent alarm on an interlocked detection system
- Failing panel relay chattering under load
Signs the valve needs replacing, not repairing
- Audible gas passing when the panel is off — a normally closed valve must seal fully
- Loud constant buzz or hum that persists after retightening
- Coil has failed more than once on the same valve body
- Valve is undersized for the appliance gas rate and starving the range at full load
- Body is over 10 years old, corroded, or the make is obsolete with no spares
If you can smell gas
- Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve and press the emergency stop button
- Do not switch anything electrical on or off, and do not use naked flames
- Open doors and windows, evacuate and keep people clear
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999
- Only then call us to make the installation safe and return it to service
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my kitchen gas valve open even though the fan is on?
The fan running is not the same as airflow being proven. If the air pressure switch or airflow sensor is not making, the panel keeps the valve closed. The switch setting, sensing tubes and actual duct pressure all need checking.
Can a solenoid valve be repaired?
Coils are replaceable and often the only failed part. A stuck, passing or corroded valve body should be replaced — the seal is the safety function.
Do you carry valves in stock?
Yes, normally closed gas solenoid valves from RP 3/4" up to RP 2", so most faults are fixed on the first visit.
Does a new valve need testing afterwards?
Yes — tightness test, valve closure timing, fan fail and emergency stop tests, then certification.
