Commercial Gas Safety Certificate (CP42)

What is a CP42 certificate?

CP42 is the commercial catering equivalent of a landlord gas safety record. It covers the fixed gas installation and catering appliances in restaurants, takeaways, hotels, pubs, schools, care homes and staff kitchens. Most insurers, landlords and environmental health officers expect a current certificate, and it is commonly renewed every 12 months.

What the inspection covers

• ✓Tightness testing of the gas installation pipework
• ✓Appliance safety checks: burners, flame failure devices, thermocouples and ignition
• ✓Gas interlock system test — extract and make-up air proving, and gas shut-off on fan failure
• ✓Emergency stop and gas solenoid valve operation
• ✓Ventilation and flue checks for each appliance
• ✓Gas rate and operating pressure checks at appliances
• ✓Record of any defects, with remedial advice and quotation

Why the interlock matters at inspection

Under BS 6173, a kitchen with mechanical ventilation must not be able to use gas unless the extraction is proved. If the interlock has failed or been bypassed, the installation is not compliant and the certificate cannot be issued until it is corrected. Because we install and service interlocks every day, most faults found at inspection can be repaired on the same visit — keeping the kitchen trading.

Most kitchens book the CP42 inspection together with annual interlock servicing in a single visit. One engineer, one site attendance, and both records issued together — usually cheaper than booking separately and far less disruptive to service.
