Commercial Kitchen Gas Shut Off
Every commercial kitchen needs two ways to stop the gas: a manual emergency shut off the staff can reach, and an automatic gas safety shut-off valve that closes on its own when ventilation fails, an emergency stop is pressed, or gas is detected.

The three layers of shut off

Where the shut offs should be
- Emergency stop on an escape route, near the kitchen exit, not buried behind equipment
- Clearly signed and unobstructed, with a labelled gas emergency notice
- Solenoid valve outside the cooking area where practical, on an accessible section of the carcass
- Main isolation valve identified and labelled, with the location known to staff
- Everyone on shift briefed on which button stops the gas
What staff should do
- Smell gas: press the emergency stop, isolate, ventilate, evacuate, call 0800 111 999
- Fire in the canopy: press the emergency stop before tackling anything
- End of service: shut down as trained — do not rely on the interlock as an isolation device
- Never tape, strap out or block an emergency stop or interlock
- Report every unexplained gas shut off so the cause is found
If you can smell gas
- Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve and press the emergency stop button
- Do not switch anything electrical on or off, and do not use naked flames
- Open doors and windows, evacuate and keep people clear
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999
- Only then call us to make the installation safe and return it to service
Frequently asked questions
Is an automatic gas shut off valve a legal requirement?
In a commercial kitchen with mechanical ventilation, BS 6173 requires gas appliances to be interlocked with ventilation, and in practice that means an automatic shut-off valve controlled by the interlock. Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations duties sit on top of that.
Where should the emergency gas shut off be?
In an accessible, clearly signed position on an escape route, so staff can reach it while leaving rather than walking towards the hazard.
How often should shut off be tested?
Function-tested at least annually as part of the interlock service, and recorded. Many operators check the emergency stop far more often as part of routine checks.
Can you fit shut off to an existing kitchen?
